Domestic violence programs

Emergency and safe housing, a response team, therapy, counseling and legal assistance for people harmed by a current or former partner.

Understanding it

Domestic violence is a range of behaviors used to establish power and exert control by one current or former intimate partner over the other. It can take any of several forms: physical, financial, psychological or emotional, religious or spiritual, sexual, social, legal, or verbal. It can also include stalking and coercive control over the person being abused.

It tends to follow a cycle: building tension leads to an incident of physical, verbal, psychological or sexual abuse, followed by reconciliation, where the person abusing attempts to apologize, and a period of calm. The cycle escalates as it repeats itself.
